Day 29
SHAH ALAM (Aug 3, 2007): The Shah Alam High court was told of discrepancies in the police report lodged by ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin on the revelation (of the valuables found in a jacket in Cpl Sirul Azhar Umar’s Kota Damansara home) by Sirul who is accused of murdering Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.

ABOVE: The alert defense counsel who spotted the minor discrepancies in the changes in different versions of the police reports given to different parties

During cross-examination, Zulkarnain who is the prosecution’s 23rd witness, Sirul’s defence counsel Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin pointed out differences in copies of the report that were given to the defence counsels, and the ones in possession of the Deputy Public Prosecutors (DPPs) and judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin.

The copies in the possession of the DPP and the judge said the "named" (penama) wants to make a revelation. However the copy in possession of the defence counsels states "Sirul Azhar Umar" wants to make a revelation. The report was lodged by Zulkarnain last Nov 7, after he interrogated Sirul together with C/Insp Koh Fei Cheow. The judge told the counsels to sort it out before adjourning the hearing for lunch and Friday prayers.
When hearing resumed after lunch break, Kamarul pointed out several other discrepancies, including the fact that the defence copies of the police report and that held by the prosecution had some mistakes, including Zulkarnain’s ranking which was stated as Chief Inspector when he was Assistant Commisioner of Police (ACP) at that time.

Zulkarnain’s birth date was also stated as Oct 5, 2073, in the prosecution’s report while the defence’s report stated it as Oct 5, 1973. Also in the defence copy, the column for handphone was written as HP while that of the prosecutions copy was written as "bimbit". There were also discrepancies in the fonts for the headings "Polis DiRaja Malaysia, Report Polis" on the two reports.

Asked to explain the differing reports ASP Zulkarnain said: "On that day after returning from Sirul’s house, I checked the police report I had made earlier that afternoon and found some mistakes, where I did not include the name of the person I had interrogated." "Therefore at 6.45pm I called the Bukit Aman Information Technology unit to make corrections, and was told to write a correction report via the Police Reporting System (PRS) and mention the corrections I wanted made," he said.

"I changed the word "penama" to Sirul Azhar Umar and the words "... yang saya simpan ..." (which I am keeping) to "... ada saya simpan..." (used to keep), said Zulkarnain. The copy which the defence was holding was the original copy while the prosecution team were in posession of the amended copy. Zulkarnain said he realised that there were mistakes in the first report which was typed out by C/Insp Koh Fei Cheow and signed by him when her returned to his office from Sirul’s Kota Damansara house.
The prosecution team meanwhile said that it would produce the original copy of the original police report as the defence teams had queried some black marks on the top portion of the document. "Even these black marks have become a problem?" Mohd Zaki remarked. Kamarul then said: "It appears to be some kind of a stamp. It’s relevant to show when it was signed," he said.

DPP Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah then said: "Therefore, it is important to explain the black mark. I will ask the investigating officer to go to the police station to get the original copy. "It’s a computer print out, the original may be in the Tun H.S.Lee police station." Hearing was then adjourned to Wednesday (Aug 8).

Cop lodges report against troublesome woman

SHAH ALAM (Aug 3, 2007): The police in charge of the courtroom where the Altantuya murder trial is being held lodged a report against a 51-year-old woman for disrupting court proceedings. The woman who has been attending hearings daily created a scene in court this morning, just before Mohd Zaki walked in. She screamed at court police whom she accused of taking away her "chair". The report lodged by L/Cpl Zulkifli Abdul Rahman, 45, stated that the woman had ordered police to place chairs in the public gallery and not remove these at anytime during the Razak Baginda case, although even lawyers and the media are not allowed to move or use these.

The report also stated that the woman often tries to accompany the police escort party which leads the three accused into court, and attempts to walk together with the DPPs and defence lawyers during break so as to have her picture taken by the press. Zulkifli also stated that the woman often makes noise during break time by chatting with friends over the handphone and reads SMS during the hearing. She is also allegedly making lawyers, the DPPs and the media uncomfortable during and before hearings. She also disputes the duties of police personnel who are on duty during the trial.

Police Seize Sheet Of Paper, Bills From Azilah, Court Told
SHAH ALAM, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- A police officer told the High Court he found a sheet of paper containing some information and three mobile telephone bills in a blue bag on the desk of Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri, the first accused in the trial into the murder of a Mongolian woman, Altantuya Shaariibuu. ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters, the 23rd prosecution witness, said the sheet of A4-size paper had the following words written on it:

"Datuk Abdullah Malim Baginda, 22 Jalan Setia Jaya Damansara Heights 50690 Kuala Lumpur. 012-2132303 0173271703. "017-3992411 - Room 823 Hotel Malaya Jalan Hang Lekir. Amina. "Ho 50's. Zulkarnain, who was continuing with his testimony during examination-in-chief, said the bag was recovered from Azilah's desk at his Special Action Force (UTK) office in Bukit Aman on Nov 12 last year.

1 Another trial-within-a-trial allowed
2 Itemised telephone bills, notes seized from C/Insp Azilah's office

R. Surenthira Kumar and Maria J.Dass, SUN
DAY 29
SHAH ALAM (Aug 2, 2007): The High Court today allowed the defence to challenge Cpl Sirul Azhar Umar's statement and conduct in showing the police where he kept the Mongolian woman's jewellery. Justice Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin said he was allowing the defence's application for a trial-within-a-trial in the interest of fairness. The request was made by Cpl Sirul's counsel Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin yesterday. Kamarul had asked the court to decide if it should exclude two statements Sirul made to ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin (BELOW), based on the reasoning that these were obtained via improper or unlawful means.

The two statements in question are:
* "I can show you the jewellery belonging to the woman whom I shot in the jungle. I am keeping it in my home in Kota Damansara"; and
* Sirul Azhar told Zulkarnain: "I kept the jewellery in the jacket" when the jacket was being removed from the cupboard. Sirul also nodded and pointed to the jewellery (a pair or earrings, a Larmes watch and a ring) when Zulkarnain asked him (Sirul Azhar) if these were the items he was referring to.
Mohd Zaki said the Federal Court in the Francis Anthonysamy case readied a mechanism for the exclusion either via a trial within a trial or in substantive trial or both. "Although the decision was an obiter (mentioned in passing), for the purpose of fairness, the court will allow the trial within a trial to decide on the exclusion," he said. Earlier, DPP Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah said the prosecution was objecting to the trial-within-a-trial as this was only employed for the purpose of admitting evidence and not otherwise. He and Abdul Razak Baginda's lawyer K.K.Wong said the statement in the Francis Anthonysamy case was obiter.

However, Kamarul said: "In Francis (Anthonysamy), Karpal argued that although there was no objection, it was still involuntary and that the caution under Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) was not read. That breach amounted to giving the court a vested discretion to exclude it. "The essence in Francis is the principal of non-compliance to Section 112 of the CPC, thus unfair to the accused person," he said. Karpal Singh, who is holding a watching brief for Altantuya's family and the Mongolian government, said except in the case of Francis Anthonysamy, other highest court in the country has held there should be no trial-within-a-trial. "It is my submission that it is obiter," he said, of the judgement for the Francis case.

2 Itemised telephone bills, notes seized from C/Insp Azilah's office

SHAH ALAM (Aug 2, 2007): A blue sling bag containing three itemised telephone bills and a handwritten note were seized by the police team which inspected Chief Insp Azilah Hadri's office, a police officer told the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder trial today. ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin said the billing showed several unidentified numbers were dialled. He then read out those numbers. (In previous testimonies, some of the numbers read out had been identified as belonging to Altantuya, Abdul Razak Abdullah Baginda and private investigator P. Balasubramaniam.) In the other A4 size paper, the same telephone numbers and also that of an ASP Suresh were found handwritten on it.
Besides that, other handwritten details on the paper included:
* Abdullah Malim Baginda and address 22, Jalan Setiajaya,
Damansara Heights, 50690 Kuala Lumpur.
* Aminah
* HO P1 50's
* Room 823, Hotel Malaya, Jalan Hang Lekir
*
9/10/06 Monday come to office

* 5787, 9885
Zulkarnain said the check was carried out in Azilah's office in the Special Action Unit (UTK) in the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman on
Nov 12, 2006.

On Nov 13, Zulkarnain and his team escorted Abdul Razak to his office in Bangunan Lembaga Getah Asli Malaysia on Jalan Ampang and seized a pink-coloured A4 size paper which contained some telephone numbers, two small note books and a personal digital assistant (PDA).
He said the notes in the pink paper read as 'Mr Razak please contact me 017 3992411 and Amin or Amina and handphone numbers 012 2132303 and 012 2409311'.

One of the note books had the words 'Team A Zone' on the cover while another depicted the sketch of a man riding a horse. Zulkarnain said all the items seized from Azilah and Abdul Razak's office were handed over to investigating officer ASP Tony Lunggan. Earlier, when the trial resumed after lunch, the anticipated proceedings for a trial-within-a-trial did not commence after DPP Tun Abdul Majid Tun Hamzah told the court that based on the ruling, it was appropriate for him to continue with the examination-in-chief before his witness was cross examined and re-examined prior to the start of the trial-within-a-trial. Judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin agreed the trial-within-a-trial be held later after the parties were done with the witness. Later, during Tun Abdul Majid's examination-in-chief, Cpl Sirul's lawyer Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin asked the court whether the cross-examination would be reserved until the end of the trial-within-a-trial, as the defence was calling some police witnesses to testify.

ABOVE: The disappointment can be seen in the lead DPP Tun Abdul Majid

"I see no prejudice if the procedure is reversed. It's an unusual scenario because I am concerned about the sanctity of the testimonies that the witnesses will provide," said Kamarul Hisham. Tun Abdul Majid said Kamarul Hisham's statement is "very strong" and that his concerns were baseless as the court had to follow the procedure that is in place.
Mohd Zaki ordered the cross-examination be continued.
Azilah's lawyer Hazman Ahmad began asking Zulkarnain to give a detailed description of the Serious Crime Division (D9) office in the
Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters.
The judge later instructed him to draw a sketch of the D9 office, when the trial adjourned to tomorrow.
= = == = = Karpal pissed off over remarks
SHAH ALAM (Aug 2, 2007): Karpal Singh, who is holding a watching brief for the Mongolian government and Altantuya Shaariibuu's family, lashed out at C/Insp Azilah Hadri's lawyer Hazman Ahmad for joking about his (Karpal's) principles.

ABOVE: Karpal Singh's anger at the tackless "obiter" remarks made by Hazman (BELOW right)

Hazman had during a chat in court with fellow counsels, including Karpal's colleague Daniel Abishegam yesterday afternoon said: "He (Karpal) has to be with us on this issue because this is what he said in Francis Anthonysamy. If he doesn't, then he has no principles and asks him to join Barisan Nasional." The Francis Anthonysamy case in which Karpal was defence lawyer was quoted during submissions on whether a trial-within-a-trial should be held. Karpal brought this up when submitting on whether a trial-within-a-trial should be held to determine if two statements by Cpl Sirul Azhar Umar should be excluded.

Hazman then said that this was a joke. He later apologised personally to Karpal during the break. However, Karpal who was clearly irked said: "A man's principles should not be joked about. I am national chairman of DAP and to say I should join BN ..." He added: "As professionals we should be careful about commenting about someone, especially behind their backs." Asked if he accepted Hazman's apology, Karpal said: "I told him ... you got to be careful. What he said was obiter (in passing)."

ABOVE & BELOW: The weight on defense counsel K K Wong (for Abdul Razak Baginda) is indeed heavy both in mind and the suitcases of paperwork to get through during this trial
What happened today (Day 29)
* Prosecution and defence submitted on whether a trial-within-a-trial should be held to determine admissibility of Cpl Sirul Azhar Umar's statements to the police.
* The judge later decided to allow the defence's application.
* After the lunch break, however, ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin from the Serious Crime Division of the
Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters continued to be cross-examined until court adjourned to tomorrow.

Court Orders Trial-Within-A-Trial In Altantuya Murder Trial

SHAH ALAM, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- The defence in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder trial was given the green light by the High Court here today to challenge Cpl Sirul Azhar Umar's statement and conduct in showing the police where he kept the Mongolian woman's jewellery. Justice Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yasin said the court was allowing the defence' application for a trial-within-a-trial in the interest of fairness.

The trial-within-a-trial, to be held after ASP Zulkarnain Samsudin completes his testimony, is to determine whether Siru Azhar's statement to Zulkarnain that he could show where he kept the jewellery and his pointing to the jewellery could be excluded as evidence. His counsel, Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin, contended that it should not be admitted on the ground that it is a statement leading to discovery under Section 27 of the Evidence Act 1950.
Yesterday, Zulkarnain testified that Sirul Azhar told him: "I can show the woman's jewellery. I kept it in my house in Kota Damansara. I kept the jewellery in a jacket.

Zulkarnain also testified that Sirul Azhar nodded and pointed to the jewellery and said: "These are her things".

Brothers, uncle to be charged with student's murder;

KUALA LUMPUR: Three brothers and their uncle are expected to be charged on Friday with the Aug 2 murder of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) student Tang Lai Meng, 20. Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Rosli Mohd Nizam said with the arrests, police have solved the case as they have gathered enough evidence against the four. The uncle, who was the prime suspect, was caught in an apartment unit in Bukit Jalil at 3pm on Saturday following a tip-off. ACP Rosli said police obtained a six-day remand order on the 36-year-old man on Sunday. The man also led police to the recovery of the Toyota Vios belonging to the victim, from a parking lot in Taman Angsana in Cheras, not far away from Bandar Mahkota Cheras where she was murdered.

“The car could not be driven as the vehicle was immobilised by its security system. We also recovered from the suspect, a laptop computer and a hand phone that belonged to the victim,” ACP Rosli said. It is learnt that the man was convicted for a drug offence and had been placed under restricted residence in Temerloh, Pahang, but escaped and stayed with his nephews. On Thursday, police detained the three brothers, aged 15, 18 and 30, at their home in Bandar Mahkota Cheras.

They were said to be neighbours to the victim. Following the arrests, police launched a manhunt for their uncle who had gone into hiding upon hearing the news that his nephews had been caught. Tang, from Menglembu, Perak, was found dead in the master bedroom of her rented double-storey house. A post-mortem revealed that Tang, a first-year business administration student, had died of suffocation and was repeatedly raped by her assailants.

2007/08/12;; NST Account; Murder of Utar student ‘solved’

KUALA LUMPUR: Police believe they have solved the rape-cum-murder case of a 20-year-old Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) student. A man was arrested in Bukit Jalil at 3pm yesterday and the stolen car of the victim recovered. Selangor state police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said the unemployed man was the uncle of the three brothers arrested by police on Friday and was believed to have been the mastermind of the brutal attack.

The siblings, aged 15, 22, and 30, stayed in Bandar Mahkota Cheras near the rented house of the victim, first-year business studies degree student Tang Lai Meng. The 34-year-old man had been convicted for a drug offence and been placed under restricted residence in Temerloh, Pahang, but escaped and stayed with his nephews. When questioned, the suspect revealed the location of the silver Toyota Vios that went missing on the night that Tang was killed.

The abandoned car was recovered at Taman Angsana in Cheras, not far from Bandar Mahkota Cheras. "The motive was to rob and murder. "We now consider the case solved," said Khalid. The man will be brought to the Kajang magistrate’s court, which is temporarily housed in the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya, today for police to obtain a remand order. Excluding this suspect, police have arrested and remanded eight people, including the brothers, to assist in the investigation. On Aug 2, Tang’s body was found in a bedroom by policemen who responded to a call from a neighbour. Several fingerprints were lifted from the scene and police discovered that Tang’s car was missing. A post-mortem showed she suffocated to death. There were also traces of semen on her.

Twist in UTAR student's sodomy, rape and murder case

Cops nab 3 brothers, launches manhunt for trio's uncle

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 10, 2007): The on-going police probe into the murder of a Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) student has taken a twist with the arrest of three brothers. Police have also launched a manhunt for the trio's uncle who has gone into hiding. Malaysia's national news agency Bernama learnt that the uncle is suspected to have masterminded the attack on the victim, Tang Lai Meng, 20.

Selangor CPO Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar (ABOVE)said the siblings, who were remanded for a week, were odd-job workers aged between 15 and 30. He said they were picked up in their home in Bandar Mahkota Cheras yesterday, near where Tang stayed alone in a rented double-storey link house. "We waited for the right time to nab the brothers. With the arrests, the police have managed to obtain new leads into the killing. "As the siblings are very cooperative, we hope to complete our investigations soon," he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the Social Science Masters Programme 2005/2006 in the Royal Malaysia Police College here today.

The latest arrests bring to eight the number of people picked up to facilitate investigations into the murder of the first-year business administration student. The others are Tang's former boyfriend and four Pakistani security guards. Meanwhile, Kajang OCPD ACP Rosli Mohd Nizam said police were trying to determine whether the siblings had criminal records. On Aug 2, Tang, from Menglembu in Ipoh, Perak, was found dead in her master bedroom. A post-mortem revealed she died of suffocation and was repeatedly sodomised by her assailants

UPDATE: Aug 08 07; 1.10pm

Tuesday, August 07 2007; Missing guards nabbed
By RAHMAN DAROS, MM

THREE security guards were arrested on Saturday in connection with the Aug 2 rape and murder of 20-yearold student Tang Lai Meng in Section 1, Bandar Mahkota Cheras. The trio, Pakistanis aged between 27 and 45, who work in the neighbourhood were picked up around 2am. Initially, police had detained one of the suspects who was on duty. The other two suspects, his flatmates, were picked up later. Police had been looking for the suspects since the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) undergraduate’s body was found three days ago. Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Rosli Mohd Nizam said they are being remanded for two weeks.

We hope these men will be able to provide more information on the case,” he said when contacted by The Malay Mail yesterday. Rosli also said the victim’s silver Toyota Vios, registration number AFT 2267, is still missing. It is learnt that police have put up an all-points bulletin to look for the car. “We are also looking for a couple who frequented the victim’s house as claimed by neighbours,” he said. The DNA samples taken from a man, in his 40s, believed to have been romantically involved with the victim were sent to the Chemistry Department for tests. The test report is expected to be ready next week. The man, from Ipoh, was frequently seen by neighbours visiting Tang. He turned up at Kajang police headquarters at 8pm on Thursday, hours after Tang’s body was found and spent several hours at the station, to have his statement recorded.

He had his statement recorded again when he was at Serdang Hospital, the following day. Some of the items missing from the house, such as a cell phone and a laptop, were believed to be gifts from him. Tang, a business administration student from Menglembu, Perak, was found in the master bedroom of her double-storey rented house by police, following a call from a neighbour. She was found lying on her side, her arms tied behind her back with a black T-shirt and her mouth stuffed with a pillow case. She was clad only in a T-shirt. Though there were no signs of forced entry into her room, there were signs of a break-in at the grille at the back of the house. It was earlier reported that a post-mortem revealed that Tang had died of suffocation, and was repeatedly raped and sodomised by her assailants.

Selangor CPO Khalid Abu Bakar (ABOVE) confirmed the 3 Pakistani guards were detained for abusing their Immigration work permit and being investigated for the murder. The motive for the killing is yet to be established. More pics available

IPOH: Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) student Tang Lai Meng died before she had a chance to see her graduation photos. Her father, Tang Ah Weng, 46, said Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman, where she had recently graduated from, had sent the wrong photos to his second daughter.

Proud moment: Lai Meng receiving her scroll from Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha during her recent graduation ceremony. “We only received the correct photos on Friday, a day after her untimely death,” he said, when met at the family home in Menglembu here yesterday. The father of three said he would burn copies of the pictures during his daughter's cremation today – to allow her to get the photos in the afterlife, according to traditional beliefs. Lai Meng would be cremated at 11am at the Kek Look Seah Crematorium in Bercham. She was found dead in her rented house in Bandar Mahkota, Cheras, in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

Lai Meng, a first-year business administration student at Utar's Sungai Long branch, was found lying on her bed with her hands tied behind her back. She was only clad in a T-shirt and had a pillowcase wrapped around her neck. Earlier, MCA Youth deputy chief Datuk Ling Hee Leong said Lai Meng’s death was a great loss to the community, family and country. “We have been investing in developing human capital. “Her death is a blow as she was a straight-As student,” he said after leading a group of MCA leaders to visit the family and pay their last respects to Lai Meng.

What is important is that each soul understands its OWN choices and actions, and the consequences of their actions. Nothing ever dies - it just changes form. There is always a reason. To realize that each soul is making these decisions is a beautiful, healing and freeing experience.

Tang Lai Meng, whether you die today or tomorrow, you have lived before, and will again, and your new life, in your terms, springs out of the old, and is growing in the old and contained within it as the seed is already contained within the flower. A death is just a night to your soul. RIP

Guard on the run, from the STAR

PETALING JAYA: Police are looking for a Pakistani who worked as a security guard at Bandar Mahkota, Cheras, to help in investigations into the killing of Utar student Tang Lai Meng. The Pakistani has not turned up for work since Thursday, the day of the incident, according to state chief police officer Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar. “We have contacted his employers and I urge anyone who knows his whereabouts to contact us. We are also looking for four women and a man. “One of the women is not a student,” he said, adding that the others, all in their 20s, were Tang's former housemates.

Mother’s agony: Kang Xue Sia (ABOVE), the mother of murdered Utar student Tang Lai Meng, leaving her daughter’s rented house in Bandar Mahkota, Cheras, with a pair of her sneakers yesterday. DCP Khalid said Tang and the women studied at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman’s (Utar) Bandar Sungai Long campus. So far, police have recorded statements from six people, including Tang's 41-year-old businessman friend.
He said there were signs of forced entry into the house where Tang's semi-nude body was found, adding that her wallet, laptop and a Toyota Vios were missing. Tang had been raped and strangled.
Earlier, Tang's family members identified her body at Serdang Hospital, where a post-mortem was carried out. The report revealed that she died of asphyxiation. Tang's mother Kang Xue Sia broke down after identifying her daughter’s body and kept muttering in Mandarin: “I told you not to study in KL but you did not listen. Now, see what has happened after just two months here.” Her father, Tang Ah Weng, 46, said Tang, who was the second of three siblings, came to the capital to continue her studies with three other friends. He said his wife had wanted their daughter to study in Singapore, adding that they had planned to buy the girl a house in Kuala Lumpur when she insisted on studying there. “Three days before the incident, she called and spoke to her mother but she did not mention any problem,” he said, when met at the hospital.

It is learnt that the Tang family had gone to the house and collected all the girl's belongings at 11am yesterday before claiming her body and returning to Ipoh. Utar director (external affairs) Low Bee Eng said the university council met yesterday to discuss the murder and an anti-crime campaign at the university. She said Utar council president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, who chaired the meeting, advised the students to be careful and understand the precautionary measures to be taken. Utar student representative’s council member Leong Chi Wei, 19, said Tang was a brilliant student. “I did not know her personally but I knew she was a straight-As student,” Leong said.

‘More than one involved in murder of Utar student’
Lee Shi-Ian and Alang Bendahara;

KUALA LUMPUR: More than one person is believed to have been involved in the sexual assault and murder of a Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) student on Thursday. From the evidence gathered so far, police believed that 20-year-old Tang Lai Meng was held down by at least two men and was sodomised. It is believed that a pillow was held over her face to muffle her screams. Police also confirmed that there was evidence of a break-in at the double-storey terrace house in Jalan Putera 4/1, Bandar Mahkota, Cheras, where Tang’s semi-nude body was found.

Selangor police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said they were looking for several people who were last seen in the vicinity of the neighbourhood to help in investigations. "The victim’s boyfriend, a man in his 40s, has come forward to facilitate investigations and his statement has been recorded. "The boyfriend informed us that he had been visiting Tang during the weekends. "They had been going out together not long after Tang completed her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination," Khalid said.

"Tang’s family members have also given their statements and investigations are on-going to locate her missing silver Toyota Vios," he said. The Toyota Vios, with the registration number AFT 2267, was a gift from Tang’s parents and the public are urged to contact the police if they see the car.
Apart from the car, Tang’s mobile phone, laptop and purse are also missing. Tang, who is from Taman Wang, Menglembu, in Perak, was a business studies (business administration) student. Police do not rule out the possibility that Tang, who had only stayed at the house for a month, had been secretly observed by her assailants before they struck early Thursday.

Police are also seeking a couple who frequently visited Tang and spent the night during these visits. It is believed they could shed some light on the investigation. Checks revealed that Tang had attended classes over the past few days prior to the attack.

On Thursday, Tang’s body, clad only in a T-shirt, was found in her bedroom by olicemen who responded to a call by her neighbour. The neighbour, in his 50s, was strolling along the back alley of the house about 11am on Thursday when he suspected that someone had broken into the house. The bottom part of the door grille was prised open and several window panes had been removed. The window grille had also been prised opened.

When the police arrived, they found the front gate and door unlocked. They entered the house to check and found Tang’s body. Tang was found lying sideways on a bed in the master bedroom on the top floor. Her hands were tied behind her back and there was a pillow case around her neck. There were no signs of struggle in the room and the front door lock was intact. Several fingerprints were also lifted from the scene.

Straight-A student found dead, sodomised

By RAHMAN DAROS, MM
TIED up, strangled and sodomised.

That was the gruesome fate of a 20-year-old female Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman undergraduate, who was found dead in her rented home in Jalan Putera 4/1, Bandar Mahkota Cheras, yesterday. The body of Tang Lai Meng, an A-list student from Menglembu, Perak, was found in the master bedroom of the double-storey terrace house by police. Clad only in a T-shirt, Tang was found lying on her side, her arms tied to her back with a black T-shirt. Her bra and panties were found near the body. Police had gone to check on the house following a phone call by a neighbour at 11.30am, claiming that Tang’s home could have been broken into as the front door and gate were wide open.
Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Rosli Mohd Nizam said the victim is believed to have been sodomised.

There were semen stains on her anus but there were no wounds or bruises on the other parts of her body. There were also reddish marks on her arms,” he said. Investigators believe that the victim probably knew her assailant as the room did not appear to have been ransacked. “There was a pillowcase around her neck and we also found evidence of her being strangled. However, there was no blood around her,” said Rosli. Tang, a second year student in the Diploma in Business Administration programme at the Bandar Sg Long campus, was a straight-A student. Police found her September 2005 examination results, which showed that she had scored a CGPA of 4.0.
Her student pass was found next to the bed. Her cell phone, MyKad, laptop and cash, however, were missing. Police have recovered several fingerprints from the house. Although there were no signs of forced entry into her room, there were signs of a break-in at the grille at the back of the house. All clues point to a mysterious man, whom neighbours claim was a frequent visitor to the house. The man, described by neighbours as being in his 40s, drives a silver Proton Waja and regularly spent the night at Tang’s house.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that they may have been romantically involved. A 66-year-old neighbour, who only wished to be identified as Lim, was the fi rst to alert police when he saw Tang’s front door and gate wide open.
“I thought it was a robbery as several houses here had been broken into,” said the retiree.

“Later, when I heard about the murder, there is no one else I can think of except for this man. His silver Proton Waja was here most of the time. Sometimes at 1pm, 7pm, anytime. He frequently spent nights here because I’d see his car the following morning when I take my regular walk,” he said, describing the man as “broad shouldered” and “a little bit fat”. Lim also gave the vehicle’s registration number to police.

Another neighbour, M. Meena, said she last saw the man at 7 last night.
Sometimes, the girl would bring her friends over as well. But most of the time, the man was at the house,” said the 44- year-old widow. She added that the victim moved in three months ago. The man is being sought by police to help in investigations. It is learnt that Tang’s Toyota Vios, is also missing. The house, which the victim had rented on her own, was sparsely furnished. It only had a sofa, coffee table, wardrobe and bed.

The two other rooms upstairs were unoccupied. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. Tang’s body was sent to Serdang Hospital for a postmortem.

UTAR student found murdered

Charles Ramendran, SUN

KAJANG (Aug 2, 2007): A 20-year-old Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) undergraduate, believed to have been raped, was found strangled in her rented house in Bandar Mahkota Cheras near here early today. The semi-nude body of Tang Lai Meng, who is from Ipoh and a second year diploma in business administration student, was found with her hands bound to her back. An elderly neighbour in his 60s who declined to be named was taking his daily walk on the backlane of the the Jalan Putera 4/1 double-storey house in Section 1 at 11am when he spotted the backdoor grille pried open. Suspecting something amiss, he called the police who arrived within minutes and found the front gate and door ajar.

When calls to the occupants went unanswered, they stepped in and found Tang on a bed in the master bedroom. Police said Tang, clad only in a T-shirt, was strangled with a pillow case found coiled round her neck. They also found an examination result slip which showed Tang was a straight-As student. Investigators suspect the assailant, who is believed to be someone known to the victim, had gained entry into the house by breaking through the rear window and fled through the main door. Ulu Langat OCPD ACP Rosli Mohd Nizam said police are looking for a man, believed to be the victim's boyfriend, and two other housemates. He said police have classified the case as murder and will await a post mortem report from the Serdang Hospital to acertain if the victim was raped.

He urged those with information to call Kajang CID at 03-8736 2222.
According to a neighbour, M.Meena, 44, who lives opposite Tang's house, the student who had never mingled or spoken to them moved into the house about three months ago. She said a middle-aged man who drove a silver Proton Waja often turned up to fetch the victim from the house. The housewife said there was also a couple whom she had seen putting up in the house but was unsure if they were tenants of the house. The elderly neighbour who called the police said he often saw the middle-aged man spending time in the house but was surprised that he had not turned up throughout the five hours police were at the scene dusting the place for clues with the help of forensics police and tracker dogs.

KAJANG: The semi nude body of a 20-year-old student, believed to have been raped and strangled, was found in her house in Bandar Mahkota, Cheras here.

Tang Lai Meng, a first year business administration student at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar), Sg Long branch, was found lying on her bed with her hands tied behind her back. She was only clad in a T-shirt while a pillowcase was found wrapped around her neck.

A police team rushed to the double-storey house at noon after receiving a report from a neighbour who saw the back grille door damaged and a window wide open. They found Lai Meng’s body in the front room upstairs. The police team also found the front doors open indicating that her assailant or assailants could have used the keys to open the doors from inside to flee. Lai Meng’s wallet was missing but other valuables in the house were untouched. Later in the evening, a relative reported to the police that the girl’s car was also missing.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Rosli Mohd Nizam said initial investigations showed that Lai Meng who is from Menglembu, Ipoh could have been attacked seven to eight hours before her body was discovered. We urge her housemates to contact us to assist in the investigations,” he said. Police were also looking for a woman in her 30’s who had made frequent visits to Lai Meng’s house.
A neighbour in his late 60’s, who did not want to be identified, said that he discovered the back grill door damaged and the window open when he was going for his morning walk at about 11am.

“I immediately contacted the police,” he said, adding that he had also noticed a man in a Silver Proton Waja frequenting the house. In Ipoh, Lai Meng’s family who operate a restaurant business at Bandar Baru Menglembu refused to believe the bad news when informed by reporters, SYLVIA LOOI reports. Her father, Tang Ah Weng, 46, then went to the Menglembu police station at about 3pm to enquire. Lai Meng’s death was only confirmed after relatives called up the Kajang police station at about 4.30pm. Earlier, Tang said the family last saw his second daughter on July 22. “She had returned to collect her results from Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman in Kampar,” said the father of three children.
