IJOK, Malaysia : Malaysia's ruling coalition fended off a spirited opposition campaign led by former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim in a crucial by-election on Saturday. The ruling national front or Barisan Nasional retained the semi-rural Ijok seat in central Selangor state against the People's Justice Party, or Keadilan, with an increased majority, the Election Commission announced.

"I declare K. Parthiban from Barisan Nasional as the state assemblyman for Ijok," said election official Haris Kasim (ABOVE). Parthiban secured 5,884 votes while Keadilan's Abdul Khalid Ibrahim got 4,034 votes, Kasim said. "Barisan won with a majority of 1,850 votes," he said. A a total of 10,049 voters, or 81.9 percent, of the 12,272 eligible voters had cast their ballots, a record turnout for the constituency. In the 2004 general election, the BN defeated Keadilan by 1,649 votes in the constituency. The weekend poll is seen as a litmus test of popularity for both sides ahead of a general election expected before 2009. "I am sad for Malaysia," Anwar told reporters. - AFP/ch

BN Continues Winning Streak, Retains Ijok Seat With Higher Majority

KUALA SELANGOR, April 28 (Bernama) -- The Barisan Nasional (BN) continued its winning streak, retaining the semi-urban Ijok state seat with an increased majority of 1,850 votes in today's keenly-fought by-election. BN's K. Parthiban polled 5,884 votes while Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) received 4,034 votes in the straight fight. There were 134 spoilt votes. Returning Officer Haris Kassim announced the results at 8.42pm. The BN had earlier won four by-elections. They are in Kuala Berang (Terengganu), Permatang Pasir (Kelantan), Batu Talam (Pahang) and Machap (Melaka).

In today's by-election, which recorded the highest ever voter turnout in the the country's election history, a total of 10,049 or 81.88 per cent of the 12,272 electorate cast their ballots. The predominantly Malay seat fell vacant following the death of Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, of a heart attack in Chennai, India, on April 4. In the last general election, Sivalingam retained the ethnically-mixed seat with a 1,649-vote majority in a three-cornered fight, beating PKR's Abdol Rahman Moharam and Mohamed Shariff Nagoorkani, an independent. Ijok, a traditional MIC seat since 1990, is among BN's fortress in Selangor. This is the second attempt by PKR to wrest the seat from BN, the first being in the last general election in 2004.

Voting Gains Pace, 33 Pct Ijokians Vote As At Noon

ABOVE & BELOW: Those unable to walk & the handicap were the early voters not to miss the boat to vote

KUALA SELANGOR, April 28 (Bernama) -- Voting in the keenly fought Ijok by-election has picked up momentum, with about 33 per cent Ijokians having exercised their electoral rights as of noon. Election Commission secretary Datuk Kamaruzaman Mohd Noor said voting at all the nine polling centres was proceeding smoothly despite the cheers and jeers by supporters of the opposing parties. "I expect the voter turnout to gain pace in the evening despite the overcast skies and rain in several areas," he told Bernama. The Meteorology Department had forecast heavy rain and thunderstorm in the evening. The nine polling stations will remain open until 5pm after which votes will be counted at the respective voting centres before being tallied at the Batang Berjuntai community hall. Results are expected to be announced at about 8pm if there was no recount.

The Barisan Nasional (BN) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) are locking horns in this semi-urban seat which fell vacant upon the death of BN assemblyman Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, who died of a heart attack in Chennai, India, on April 4. The choice for Ijokians is between two political unknowns -- BN's K. Parthiban, 38, a former teacher, and PKR's Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, 61, a former corporate figure. Both are first-time candidates. Sivalingam retained the Malay-majority seat with a 1,649-vote majority in the last general election.

Polling Marked By War Of Words Between BN, Opposition Supporters
April 28, 2007 12:52 PM
KUALA SELANGOR, April 28 (Bernama) -- Scenes of heated exchanges of words between supporters of Barisan Nasional (BN) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) outside polling centres marked the voting process in the Ijok state by-election in Selangor Saturday. Both camps could also be seen canvassing for votes at the entrances to the nine polling centres in Sungai Darah, Batang Berjuntai, Jaya Setia, Bukit Badong, Kampung Ijok, Pekan Ijok, Simpang Ijok, Tuan Mee, and Pekan Berjuntai Bestari Utara. Under the watchful eye of dozens of police personnel on duty at the polling stations, BN and opposition supporters were spotted hurling insults at each other. The situation was rather tense but under control. A Bernama survey found that it had been a rather slow start as voting was taking place amid overcast skies with rain being reported in several areas.

ABOVE: The DPM and BELOW Tan Sri Khalid were early birds at Ijok

It is a straight fight between BN's K. Parthiban, 38, and PKR's Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, 61. The by-election is being held following the death of BN assemblyman Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, on April 4. In the 2004 general election, Sivalingam beat PKR's Abdol Rahman Moharam and independent candidate Mohamed Shariff Nagoorkani by a 1,649-vote majority. At the Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Badong polling station, BN and PKR supporters were seen shoving each other as PKR information chief faced difficulty in reaching his party's booth. The incident was said to have started when BN supporters overflowed into the PKR area which coincided with Tian Chua's arrival, prompting him to be mistakenly accused of trying to canvass for votes among prospective BN voters. Police immediately intervened to control the situation but a disgruntled Tian Chua could not resist to have a war of words with the police personnel present. Meanwhile, several BN leaders such as Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal were seen assisting wheelchair-bound senior citizens and disabled persons making their way to the polling centres. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Selangor Menteri Besar were among the leaders who visited several polling stations this morning.The Ijok constituency has 12,272 registered voters.

The BN is exploiting this “slip of the Tongue” to the hilt by saying that he still has a “soft Spot for BN” and it machinery is silently calling on all the electronic media to repeat this Video Clip Segment; even a "repeat" of his "tongue Slip" was included to emphasize his words just in case viewers missed it the first time around. BN supporters are being deliberately interviewed one by one after the video clip for their opinions on the meaning of this slip and further exploiting his weakness.

It was a mistake indeed and the PKR camp and its sympathizers must admit it graciously with the hard evidence now available and stop decrying it was a deliberate “spin or lie”. After a hard day’s campaigning he was tired, this slip can happened (and he was not even aware of it) and the people can understand. It should have NO impact on the decision of the Ijok voters who are not that easily swayed by a minor slip of the tongue. Tomorrow is his Present Point of Power if elected as Ejok Assemblyman. But what are his chances in the face of the overwhelming "developments" suddenly brought to Ijok.

Khalid Has Soft Spot For BN, Says Najib

KUALA SELANGOR, April 27 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today he sympathised with the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate in the Ijok state by-election, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, whom he described as having a soft spot for the Barisan Nasional (BN) though he represents an opposition political party. He said Khalid's slip of the tongue in calling on Ijok constituents to vote for his opponent and BN candidate K. Parthiban, 38, during a by-election campaign speech showed that the former Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) chief executive officer had a liking for the BN though he was a member of the PKR.

"He made the mistake because he cannot yet forget the good deeds the BN has done for him. It is for this reason that he finds it difficult to shed the soft spot he has for the BN," he told reporters after conducting a house-to-house campaign in Taman Bukit Badong Timur, here. When addressing PKR supporters during a campaign at the Tuan Mee Estate last Wednesday, Khalid, 61, who is also former Guthrie Group chief executive officer, inadvertently called on Ijok constituents to ensure victory for the BN candidate in the by-election, polling for which is tomorrow. He had said something like this:

"Now, we will bring change and now is the time ... and I hope we will all together bring about a change and vote the Barisan Nasional candidate to victory in the Ijok state constituency. Thank you."

Those words of Khalid caused an uproar among the 150 people present at the event because Khalid had promoted his opponent in the by-election.

Elaborating, Najib said it was evident that Umno and the BN had done a lot in shaping the country and safeguarding the interests of the multiracial population although this was often denied by the opposition political parties. "The people can see for themselves. Many government programmes, such as PNB and unit trusts, provide invaluable benefit for the people and country," he said.
Therefore, he said, the voters of Ijok must consider wisely and return the candidate who will represent them well.

"The voters of Ijok have to consider two things. One is the person who can take care of their interests in the constituency. The other, in the interests of the nation, is the party that can be entrusted to ensure the future of the country," he said. Najib also said that the people of Ijok were a privileged lot because they had a special place in the heart of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

He said Abdullah's visit to the constituency underscored the commitment of the prime minister and the BN in bringing development to the area, and the voters should ensure victory of BN candidate Parthiban. Abdullah yesterday visited three BN operations rooms in Ijok and met about 4,000 constituents. Tomorrow, 12,272 voters will go to the polls in the by-election, which has been necessitated by the death of BN Assemblyman Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, on April 4. In the general election in 2004,

Sivalingam garnered a 1,649-vote majority to beat Abdol Rahman Moharam of PKR and an independent candidate.

Khalid's Tongue Slips And Urges People To Vote BN

KUALA SELANGOR, April 25 (Bernama) -- Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, the Party Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate in the Ijok by-election, had a slip of the tongue when making a speech last night and mistakenly called the electorate in the hamlet to ensure a big win for the Barisan Nasional (BN) on Saturday. "Now is the time to make a change ...and I hope together we will vote the BN candidate come Saturday (polling day). Thank you," he said when ending his ceramah in the Tuan Mee Estate, where the majority of its residents are Indians. The words caused the 150 odd people present to wonder what was going on as he was "promoting" his opponent in the election.

Several staunch PKR supporters on realising the mistake quickly interceded and shouted "Tan Sri tercakap salah, Tan Sri tercakap salah" (Tan Sri's tongue slipped) to put things right. This caused the crowd to break out in laughter while some BN supporters who were following the talk, clapped their hands. Khalid, 61, a former corporate figure, hardly realising what he had done, continued to wave to the noisy crowd before sitting down on the chair reserved for him on the stage. In the by-election, he faces the BN's K.Parthiban, 38, a former edcuationist, in a straight fight. The by-election is being held following the death of BN Assemblyman Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, on April 4.

= == =

And in the closing hours of Ejok by-election campaign, the BN is accusing the Opposition PKR for another Dirty Tactic to win votes. He claimed 290 residents in Ejojk have received a Letter (printed on KDU Letetr Head) with a RM100 counterfeit note urging the residents to vote for BN. Obviously he said this is NOT the work of BN but the Opposition.

A police report has been filed and he urged KDU to check the usage of its Letter Head.

Penang police arrest 22 suspected prostitutes from China

PENANG: A pub-cum-brothel, which organised a lucky draw to attract customers, ran out of luck yesterday when police raided the place and arrested 22 suspected prostitutes from China. The women, in their early 20s, together with about 15 of their customers were nabbed during the anti-vice operation at about 10pm on Wednesday. The operator, in his 40s, who was also nabbed, had organised a lucky draw offering a Honda EX5 motorcycle, a Nokia N73 handphone and a LCD television set as the top prizes. Customers, who spent a stipulated amount on women and liquor, were given a ticket for the lucky draw.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said a check showed that the women had entered the country as tourists several weeks back. “We will recommend to the Home Ministry to have the operator 'banished' under the Restricted Residence Enactment. “Similar action will also be taken against other vice operators,” he said yesterday. A check by The Star showed that this was the second time the premises in Burmah Road had been raided by authorities. On Aug 23 last year, 36 women also from China were picked up.

MORE PICS –FISH TRADER Shot 6 Times- 6 am KL Wholesale market; MCA TAR College Student 18 nearly Raped by Security Guard After Exam during Heavy Rains

ABOVE: the student(showing the wounds during the press conference) as in the NST report. Those who watched Prima at Astro Channel 8 on 7.30 pm on Wed , there was a video clip on the press conference and the scene at TAR College.

This attempted rape of one of its students shows that this MCA controlled TAR College is unable to response well and quick to an emergency situation just like the Ong Ka Ting led MCA, a mouse within the BN. It was embarrassing for them that the parents of the victim have to go to the rival BN Gerakan toseek help and expose the problem in calling for a press conference.
Why? It was a Saturday, afternoon and all the admin staff had gone back for the week end and only the invigilating staff would still be aroundof its senior admin staff are staying within the campus and most of them are in the PJ & Damansara areas. TAR College as in MCA is highly hand picked and run and almost all the senior staff are MCA members. It is also one of the most “hen-pecked” tertiary Colleges in the whole country. Its Principal, Registrar and Assistant Registrars are all female and hand picked by the former principal Datuk (Mdm) Dr Ng Lay Swee (now promoted the VC of UTAR) and most probably they are wives of senior MCA members jockeying for these key positions. So when the crisis happened, what can they do except to convene a meeting to decide on the next course of action?
The counseling offered must be for “student placements” as these officers are trained in this area. That is why the parents refused to accept them because no such rape cases happened within the” last 38 years” in Campus and they have no experience to handle such a case. Those pioneering senior students would have heard of rape of College students staying outside many times and officially denied by the College authorities.

The TAR College has expanded beyond its capacity to cope with the excessive large student population at its main Setapak campus (opposite Taman Bunga Raya). Its students have been robbed, attacked and even murdered by snatch thieves and this latest incident would leave parents sending children to TAR College in fear. Very soon, there would be a disclaimer that the students at TAR are attending classes "at your own risk" just like you pay a parking ticket and the Car park operator is NOT responsible.

= = = == =
NB: the case mentioned in the comments below is also a well circulated case within the campus amongst the staff and as usual things are hushed up to protect the "image" of the College. And for those not in the know, many TAR graduates are holding grades that do not belong to them as in the early days of computerization, careless mistakes were made in the "data entry"

= = == = = =

ABOVE: The TAR Main Campus in the early days, now all the trees have blocked off the Main Admin Block and the College authorities (all the ladies in charge) could not be bothered to trim, to cut them and plant new ones. All of them are clueless in running a College except perhaps the academic aspects. There is also TOO much "inbreeding". Many of their OWN graduates are employed back to continue the bad habits.

Student refuses counselling

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tunku Abdul Rahman College (Ktar) student who claimed she was nearly raped by a security guard last week has refused counselling. College principal Yoong Lai Thye (ABOVE) said a counsellor had called the victim's father on Sunday, a day after the alleged incident, to try to speak with the 18-year-old girl. “But he did not pick up the phone. So, my officer left an SMS, introducing herself and stating her intention. “We have got no reply from the family,” said Yoong, commenting on claims by the student's father that he was unhappy that college officials had not visited his daughter.

ABOVE: Security Manager, Heng Poh Oyah

Yoong said the alleged victim returned to college with her father on Sunday to meet the college security manager (ABOVE). The victim's father told them that his daughter did not want any counselling from the college. “The father told us that the daughter did not want to see anybody at the moment,” said Yoong, adding that the counsellor and head of the School of Business Studies went to the victim's family house in Jinjang yesterday. They found it locked and nobody was home. “My officers tried to call the father, who again said that the family did not want any counselling service from the college,” she said.

Yoong said the college was concerned about the well-being of the victim and that the door remained open for the girl and her family to get counselling from the college. The victim could not be reached for comment at press time. Meanwhile, Yoong said the college would be installing more closed-circuit TV cameras at the campus to improve security. At the same time, it has terminated the services of the security firm that had been contracted to provide 24-hour service at the campus. We will do everything in our power to provide a safe campus environment,” she said, claiming that there had been no such incident at the campus in the past 38 years.

She said besides the services of the security company, the college has its own in-house security service. The suspect in this case was one of the contract guards, she said. “However, the arrival of a regular in-house patrol guard prevented the suspect from further harming the student.” Expressing regret over the incident, Yoong said the college would provide all assistance and counselling necessary for the student and the family to help overcome the traumatic experience

TARC student recalls ordeal of rape attempt;
Charles Ramendran Updated: 06:00PM Wed, 25 Apr 2007
KUALA LUMPUR (April 25, 2007): The security firm that hired an 18-year-old guard who attempted to rape an accountancy student in Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) last Saturday (April 21) should have its licence suspended.KL Gerakan assistant secretary K. K. Supramaniam today urged the Internal Security Ministry to suspend the security firm's licence for hiring such an "underaged" and inexperienced guard. Supramaniam made the call in a press confrence in the Gerakan headquarters in Ulu Pudu where the 18-year-old victim related her ordeal which she described as being "in the jaws of death".

"I was taking a sip from a cooler when I was hit in the head from behind. When I turned, he hit me again with the stone. "He hit me repeatedly and dragged me back into the hall (where she had just completed her examination at 5.30pm). I was stripped and he started fondling my private parts. He then pulled down his pants and when he failed to make a penetration, he started to strangle me with a shirt. "I thought I was dying as blood oozed from my head. He fled when the lights were switched on (by another guard on patrol). I picked myself up and ran but I bumped into a classmate (Ng Szeyi) who alerted the security," she said. The assailant, who continued to patrol the campus as if nothing had happened, was then nabbed by his colleagues and handed over to the police an hour after the attack.

"It's such a painful and frightening experience. I am thankful to be (still) alive today but I do not know what kind of future I have. I am too terrified to return to campus," said the first year accountancy student. The victim's father, a blacksmith from Jinjang, said: "I am very disappointed with TARC's officials who had not made any effort to enquire about my daughter's condition except for two telephone calls. "It's a shocking incident to happen in campus grounds. Worse still, the crime was committed by a security guard it hired. TARC needs to give some explanation for its breach in security," he added. TARC's student affairs department could not be reached for comments.

KUALA LUMPUR: The family of a student who was attacked by a security guard on the college grounds will seek legal redress. The student’s father yesterday accused Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) and its security provider, Full Force Security Service Sdn Bhd, of not ensuring the safety of his 18-year-old daughter.

"We are going to sue," said the businessman. "I thought my daughter would be safe in that college, instead she is suffering emotionally and physically." The student was allegedly hit on the back of the head several times and was molested by a security guard at the college on Saturday evening. She fought him off when he pinned her down and tried to rape her. The first-year business student received eight stitches for a gash on the back of the head. She is also suffering from blurred vision in the right eye. Accompanied by her father, the student related her ordeal at a press conference organised by Gerakan’s branch here yesterday. "I am not going back to that college," said the student who is the oldest of four children. "There was no one there during the attack.It was scary."

College principal Yoong Lai Thye said this is the first attack on a student on the college grounds since it began operations 38 years ago.She said the college had terminated the services of the security company. A director of Full Force Security Service said the company had vetted the suspect before he was hired. The guard is said to be 18 years old.

Nearly raped at her college

KUALA LUMPUR: An 18-year-old Tunku Abdul Rahman College (Ktar) student has alleged that she was almost raped by the person who was supposed to protect her – a security guard. The victim, who is from Jinjang, claimed at a press conference organised by Federal Territory Gerakan division here yesterday that the guard grabbed a rock and hit her on the head at least 20 times and then dragged her to a slope near the lecture hall last Saturday. She said, “It was 5.30pm and it was raining heavily. I was leaving the college after an examination and used the back entrance as it had a sheltered walkway leading to the main road.

“Near the exit, someone hit my head with a rock. When I turned around to defend myself, I saw that it was the security guard,” the girl said. She said she tried to fight back but was overpowered by the guard who dragged her behind a lecture hall. “He continued to hit me with the stone until I fell to the ground. He then started undressing me. “After that he unzipped his pants and tried to rape me. “I managed to push him away and ran for my life.” Another security guard approached her and took the injured girl to the toilet to clean her wounds.

She said the security guard then captured the suspect. The girl said she called her parents who then took her to the Wangsa Maju police station where she lodged a report. “I don’t want this to happen to anyone else especially my college mates. If I had brought an umbrella along, I would have used the front entrance and would have avoided him. Please carry a pepper spray, an umbrella or something for protection,” she said, explaining why she was relating her horrifying experience. The victim’s father said he was unhappy that college officials had yet to visit his daughter. He said the college owed them an explanation. “This is a very serious crime and my daughter could have been killed.”

In a statement, KTAR said that it had terminated the services of the security company that the suspect worked for and that it regretted what had happened to the victim. “We will provide help and counselling to the student and her family,” it said.
