Polling Marked By War Of Words Between BN, Opposition Supporters
KUALA SELANGOR, April 28 (Bernama) -- Scenes of heated exchanges of words between supporters of Barisan Nasional (BN) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) outside polling centres marked the voting process in the Ijok state by-election in Selangor Saturday. Both camps could also be seen canvassing for votes at the entrances to the nine polling centres in Sungai Darah, Batang Berjuntai, Jaya Setia, Bukit Badong, Kampung Ijok, Pekan Ijok, Simpang Ijok, Tuan Mee, and Pekan Berjuntai Bestari Utara. Under the watchful eye of dozens of police personnel on duty at the polling stations, BN and opposition supporters were spotted hurling insults at each other. The situation was rather tense but under control. A Bernama survey found that it had been a rather slow start as voting was taking place amid overcast skies with rain being reported in several areas.
ABOVE: The DPM and BELOW Tan Sri Khalid were early birds at Ijok
It is a straight fight between BN's K. Parthiban, 38, and PKR's Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, 61. The by-election is being held following the death of BN assemblyman Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, on April 4. In the 2004 general election, Sivalingam beat PKR's Abdol Rahman Moharam and independent candidate Mohamed Shariff Nagoorkani by a 1,649-vote majority. At the Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Badong polling station, BN and PKR supporters were seen shoving each other as PKR information chief faced difficulty in reaching his party's booth. The incident was said to have started when BN supporters overflowed into the PKR area which coincided with Tian Chua's arrival, prompting him to be mistakenly accused of trying to canvass for votes among prospective BN voters. Police immediately intervened to control the situation but a disgruntled Tian Chua could not resist to have a war of words with the police personnel present. Meanwhile, several BN leaders such as Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal were seen assisting wheelchair-bound senior citizens and disabled persons making their way to the polling centres. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Selangor Menteri Besar were among the leaders who visited several polling stations this morning. The Ijok constituency has 12,272 registered voters.
The BN is exploiting this “slip of the Tongue” to the hilt by saying that he still has a “soft Spot for BN” and it machinery is silently calling on all the electronic media to repeat this Video Clip Segment; even a "repeat" of his "tongue Slip" was included to emphasize his words just in case viewers missed it the first time around. BN supporters are being deliberately interviewed one by one after the video clip for their opinions on the meaning of this slip and further exploiting his weakness.
It was a mistake indeed and the PKR camp and its sympathizers must admit it graciously with the hard evidence now available and stop decrying it was a deliberate “spin or lie”. After a hard day’s campaigning he was tired, this slip can happened (and he was not even aware of it) and the people can understand. It should have NO impact on the decision of the Ijok voters who are not that easily swayed by a minor slip of the tongue. Tomorrow is his Present Point of Power if elected as Ejok Assemblyman. But what are his chances in the face of the overwhelming "developments" suddenly brought to Ijok.

Khalid Has Soft Spot For BN, Says Najib
KUALA SELANGOR, April 27 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today he sympathised with the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate in the Ijok state by-election, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, whom he described as having a soft spot for the Barisan Nasional (BN) though he represents an opposition political party. He said Khalid's slip of the tongue in calling on Ijok constituents to vote for his opponent and BN candidate K. Parthiban, 38, during a by-election campaign speech showed that the former Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) chief executive officer had a liking for the BN though he was a member of the PKR.
"He made the mistake because he cannot yet forget the good deeds the BN has done for him. It is for this reason that he finds it difficult to shed the soft spot he has for the BN," he told reporters after conducting a house-to-house campaign in Taman Bukit Badong Timur, here. When addressing PKR supporters during a campaign at the Tuan Mee Estate last Wednesday, Khalid, 61, who is also former Guthrie Group chief executive officer, inadvertently called on Ijok constituents to ensure victory for the BN candidate in the by-election, polling for which is tomorrow. He had said something like this:
"Now, we will bring change and now is the time ... and I hope we will all together bring about a change and vote the Barisan Nasional candidate to victory in the Ijok state constituency. Thank you."
Those words of Khalid caused an uproar among the 150 people present at the event because Khalid had promoted his opponent in the by-election.
Elaborating, Najib said it was evident that Umno and the BN had done a lot in shaping the country and safeguarding the interests of the multiracial population although this was often denied by the opposition political parties. "The people can see for themselves. Many government programmes, such as PNB and unit trusts, provide invaluable benefit for the people and country," he said. Therefore, he said, the voters of Ijok must consider wisely and return the candidate who will represent them well.
"The voters of Ijok have to consider two things. One is the person who can take care of their interests in the constituency. The other, in the interests of the nation, is the party that can be entrusted to ensure the future of the country," he said. Najib also said that the people of Ijok were a privileged lot because they had a special place in the heart of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
He said Abdullah's visit to the constituency underscored the commitment of the prime minister and the BN in bringing development to the area, and the voters should ensure victory of BN candidate Parthiban. Abdullah yesterday visited three BN operations rooms in Ijok and met about 4,000 constituents. Tomorrow, 12,272 voters will go to the polls in the by-election, which has been necessitated by the death of BN Assemblyman Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, on April 4. In the general election in 2004,
Sivalingam garnered a 1,649-vote majority to beat Abdol Rahman Moharam of PKR and an independent candidate.

Khalid's Tongue Slips And Urges People To Vote BN
KUALA SELANGOR, April 25 (Bernama) -- Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, the Party Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate in the Ijok by-election, had a slip of the tongue when making a speech last night and mistakenly called the electorate in the hamlet to ensure a big win for the Barisan Nasional (BN) on Saturday. "Now is the time to make a change ...and I hope together we will vote the BN candidate come Saturday (polling day). Thank you," he said when ending his ceramah in the Tuan Mee Estate, where the majority of its residents are Indians. The words caused the 150 odd people present to wonder what was going on as he was "promoting" his opponent in the election.
Several staunch PKR supporters on realising the mistake quickly interceded and shouted "Tan Sri tercakap salah, Tan Sri tercakap salah" (Tan Sri's tongue slipped) to put things right. This caused the crowd to break out in laughter while some BN supporters who were following the talk, clapped their hands. Khalid, 61, a former corporate figure, hardly realising what he had done, continued to wave to the noisy crowd before sitting down on the chair reserved for him on the stage. In the by-election, he faces the BN's K.Parthiban, 38, a former edcuationist, in a straight fight. The by-election is being held following the death of BN Assemblyman Datuk K. Sivalingam, 59, on April 4.

And in the closing hours of Ejok by-election campaign, the BN is accusing the Opposition PKR for another Dirty Tactic to win votes. He claimed 290 residents in Ejojk have received a Letter (printed on KDU Letetr Head) with a RM100 counterfeit note urging the residents to vote for BN. Obviously he said this is NOT the work of BN but the Opposition.
