"Pak Lah (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) has to build the bridge. If he does that, I don’t have any more comments."
His reply came spontaneously when he was asked by reporters to comment on deputy Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin’s sale of his stake of 10.2 million shares in ECM Libra Avenue Bhd, a financial services company. Khairy is also Abdullah’s son-in-law.
"Oh yes... that is good. First, they have to sell, then they should leave the fourth floor and go away somewhere and Pak Lah has got to build the bridge. If he does that, I don’t have any more comments.
"Now Proton is dead... all the vendors, all the dealers and salespeople are all losing money, so they are doing a good job serving Proton as promised by the Prime Minister."
Dr Mahathir, speaking after a convocation ceremony at the
Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan had said on Saturday that he was in Khazanah at that time and "we never agreed to the purchase as Agusta was saddled with a RM400-million debt, but the plans went directly to the top".
Dr Mahathir said: "They can prove it. I am quite sure they have documentary proof of this. Bring it out and show that there was no approval."
The former prime minister also hit back at Pahang Umno chief, Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, who alleged that Dr Mahathir was being used by some quarters.
"He (Adnan) is entitled to his opinion. When I was prime minister for 22 years, there were a lot of irresponsible people influencing me."
On the statement by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz that he believed Dr Mahathir wanted to topple the Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir replied: "He has his opinion, I have my opinion, takde apa (it’s nothing). This is a democratic country. It is his right to say what he wants."
Asked if he had such an intention, Dr Mahathir said: "Not me. I have no way of toppling the Prime Minister of this country... no, no way. I am not forming a new party and I am not doing anything. I am not even allowed to talk to Umno (leaders and members)".

He said the Cabinet had discussed the project in detail before deciding to cancel it.
"He (Dr Mahathir) can say whatever he wants, I am the Prime Minister. I decide what is best for the people," he told reporters after launching MSC Malaysia Cyberport here Monday.
Dr Mahathir, who has been making scathing attacks on the Abdullah administration for several months, on Sunday mentioned that he would stop his criticisms if the government resumed construction of the bridge.
Datuk Seri Najib: “Many assumptions can be made but what is important is that all quarters give its full support and unequivocal support for Datuk Seri Abdullah as UMNO President and Prime Minister”
Abdullah's Position Not Threatened By Anyone, Says Najib;
BAGAN SERAI, Aug 13 (Bernama) --Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's position would not be easily threatened by anyone, as long as he received the strong support from all levels in Umno, his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
"In my view, his position is not easily threatened by anyone," he said at a news conference after officiating the Bagan Serai Umno division delegates meeting at the Dewan Sekolah Menengah Teknik Kerian here.
"Many assumptions can be made but what is important is that all quarters give their full and unequivocal support for Abdullah as Umno President and Prime Minister," he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Umno Deputy President said this when asked to comment on a statement by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz who alleged that former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's incessant attacks on Abdullah and his administration, were aimed at destroying the party and toppling the premier.
Najib said more importantly, all leaders from the national, state and divisional levels, gave their support for Abdullah.
He said, Umno's position was also strong under one entity.
"...there's no split in Umno although there may be some individuals (who are not happy). That's normal. At anytime, there will be people who are not satisfied. We can't expect 100 per cent satisfaction," he said.
He said the important thing was that the leaders would remain united and explain to the people.
"We hope Tun (Dr Mahathir) could accept the explanations given," he said.
On allegations that Dr Mahathir might be wrongly advised, Najib said all these were perceptions and he did not wish to be drawn into the debate.
Mohamed Nazri who is also Supreme Council, when opening the Umno Padang Rengas Youth, Wanita and Puteri delegates meetings in Kati near Kuala Kangar yesterday, said, he believed that Dr Mahathir wanted to topple the Prime Minister.
He reached the conclusion based on information he received on conversations which the former prime minister had with some of his friends.
Meanwhile in his speech, Najib said the overwhelming support for Abdullah which cut across all levels in the party, was not done blindly and without understanding the issue.
"We give our support because the strategies contained in the national mission, if fully implemented, will bring about enormous benefits for the Malays and the nation...." he said.
Among others, eradicating hardcore poverty fully by 2010, equitable development which transcends state boundaries such as the concept of regional development and the commitment to realising
"How could we not support...when we have already our commitments to eradicate hardcore poverty by 2010," said Najib.
Najib said whatever crisis within the party could be resolved together through Umno's resilience and strength as the ruling party.
The deputy prime minister also announced a RM4.5 million allocation to build a community hall in Bagan Serai.

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak today (Aug 14, 2006) asked Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to show proof to back his allegation that Malaysia had offered sand and air space to Singapore.
He said although the issue is academic now as the government has decided not to go ahead with the bridge to replace the Causeway, the government is willing to look at the former prime minister's proof.
To a question from a reporter, Najib said he does not know whether the evidence that Mahathir claims he has is classified under the Official Secrets Act unless it is revealed and assessed.
"But if he is afraid to reveal it (publicly), he can submit proof to us first, we can see what he has."
Najib was speaking to reporters after opening the 58th special general meeting of the Peninsula Malay Students Confederation (GPMS).

On the move by the PJ Utara Umno division to invite Mahathir as a guest at its meeting, Najib said the party headquarters has yet to decide on the matter.
According to an Umno supreme council directive, only supreme council members, Umno ministers and mentris besar are allowed to open divisional meetings.
"Tun is still an Umno member and we take into consideration the fact the meeting was organised by Umno members. However, we will monitor the development. It is up to the Disciplinary Board," he added.
Asked whether the government is doing anything to stop Mahathir's criticisms which are confusing the public, he said they will continue to explain the issues raised.
"We cannot guarantee this (when he will stop) because we do not know what we should do to end it. We do not know what Tun actually wants in this matter," he added.
On GPMS, Najib suggested the new leadership tackle issues like the dropout rate among Malays, the imbalance between male and female university students and the unemployment among Malay graduates.
