Dr M's challenge: Swear on the Quran with me
Beh Lih Yi Aug 12, 06 6:36pm

Dr Mahathir Mohamad today insisted that he was telling the truth on the Malaysian government's offer of sand and airspace to Singapore in the bridge negotiation, adding that he was prepared to swear on the Quran on his claim.

"We can go to the mosque and swear on the Quran together, swear together in the mosque," he challenged government leaders who have rebutted his claim to do so at a press conference held at the sidelines of the Umno Youth Petaling Jaya Utara division annual general meeting this morning.

He said the proof that the Malaysian government had made the offer was in 'black and white'.

"There are people who have seen it, the meeting between Malaysia and Singapore were attended by many people and they said there is this letter, show that letter, not other letters," he stressed, adding that the government should not hide behind the Official Secrets Act.

Mahathir was not happy with the government's decision in scrapping the half-bridge project on the grounds that there were legal complication and Malaysians against the project due to the opening of Johor's airspace and sale of sand to Singapore.

The ex-premier later told malaysiakini that the offer of sand and airspace were instead made by Malaysia at a meeting in 2004 - the year after he stepped down as PM - between the two nations to get Singapore's agreement to build a straight bridge.

Mahathir also read out excerpts from a few correspondences between him and ex-Singaporean premier Goh Chok Tong at the press conference today to back his claim that the condition of airspace and sand were never included until Malaysia made the offer.

"Goh said here, 'If you wish to proceed immediately to replace just your side of the bridge, I shall accept this though I think this is not ideal'. He said 'accept', there were no conditions," the ex-premier said. When a journalist asked in jest whether he was carrying those letters around, Mahathir replied, "Yes, just in case you don't believe. There has
been confusion."

'AP agents'

Earlier, while addressing a crowd of 500 people comprising members of the Youth wing division's delegates and his supporters in a one-hour speech, Mahathir reiterated that the government should declassify all letters on the bridge project, not declassifying those that had been made public by Singapore earlier.

"If I am not right (on the claim that Malaysia made the offer), show me where I'm wrong. I'm ready to face action," he said to applause from the audience.

He pointed out that the sultan of Johor was very interested with the bridge project and had offered land for it.

At one point, Mahathir indicated that he had to cut short his speech due to time constraint but the crowd prompted him to continue speaking. He then elaborated on the rampant issuance of approved permits (APs) to import foreign luxury cars.

He questioned those who have received APs and selling them at RM40,000 each. For the first time, he named 'AP kings' Mohd Haniff Abdul Aziz and Syed Azman Syed Ibrahim as the former Miti officials who have benefitted from the AP scheme.

"They left the ministry and get the APs. If anyone wants APs, they can go and see Haniff, but why the need for the government to have an (AP) agent outside?" he asked, but immediately added that "all these are just my bad thoughts and naughty presumptions."

Mahathir repeated that the rampant issuance of APs has affected national car maker Proton's performance.

Sale Of Sand Was Not Malaysia's Proposal, Reiterates Najib
August 12, 2006 17:59 PM

SEREMBAN, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak Saturday reiterated that it had never occurred to Malaysia to sell sand to Singapore in the issue on replacing the Johor Causeway.

"I can confirm this in the government and cabinet. This matter was confirmed by our High Commissioner to Singapore (at that time) and the proposal (to sell sand to Singapore) had come from Singapore," he said when speaking at the opening of the Rembau Umno divisional delegates meeting, here.

Najib said the matter, including the use of Malaysian air space, had been raised at the officers level meeting with Singapore and the officers level meeting could not make government decisions.

Eventually, when the matter was conveyed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and presented at the cabinet meeting, a decision was made where both matters could not be accepted by the Malaysian government, he explained.

"When we said we wanted to build a bridge, they said there must be reciprocity. The Singaporeans are not easy to deal with, if we want them to spend 300-400 million, they would want their share too.

"So there was a proposal from Singapore requesting for air space, they want sand to continue with their project. So where is the government's weakness on the issue to build a bridge to replace the causeway between Johor and Singapore?" Najib asked.

He questioned where the weakness was in making the decision so much so that people had said the government had sold out the country by wanting to sell sand to Singapore.

The Deputy Prime Minister said he had also informed Abdullah that care must be taken in handling the issue because if the existing Singapore island were to double in size from the sand sold by Malaysia, it would be a major political blow to Umno and the government.

On the air space, he said although it did not have that much effect on national security, it had also become a political issue and was disturbing the local population. -

Former Malaysian PM Mahathir issues letter to protest against alleged gag order
By Channel NewsAsia's Malaysia Correspondent Melissa Goh | Posted: 12 August 2006 2054 hrs

Malaysia's former prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has issued a letter to all members of the ruling party, UMNO.

He is protesting against an alleged gag order from the party's supreme council to prevent him from speaking to other members.

Angered by the withdrawal of several invitations for him to speak at UMNO divisional meetings, he has resorted to personally issuing letters to all three million party members in the country.

Dr Mahathir said: "I just want to ask why they won't allow me to speak. I am a member of my own party, I am an UMNO member, ex-president of the party, when the ex-president cannot speak to the party members, there must be something wrong."

Stepping up the pressure on Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Dr Mahathir again accused him and his family of abuse of power.

In his letter, he challenged UMNO members to question the party president on key issues - like the alleged offer for the sale of one billion cubic metre of sand to Singapore.

Dr Mahathir said: "When he starts to lie to the people, he will lose. Never lie to the people."

The former prime minister insisted that he's not making a political comeback, neither does he intend to split the party.

He said: "There's no breakaway branch, UMNO is whole, only one or two leaders are wrong. There are always differences in UMNO, but in the end, when things become clear, both sides are heard, UMNO will come together again."

He earlier addressed an UMNO divisional meeting organised by youth leaders who wanted to hear his views.

The youth leaders said they didn't think this would upset Mr Abdullah, who is known affectionately as Pak Lah.

Mohd Azli Saad, UMNO Division Youth Chief, North Petaling Jaya, said: "I don't think Pak Lah will do that, because Pak Lah is very open."

Azrin Zizal Aziz, UMNO Delegate, said: "We're not breaking ranks. The whole reason why we are here is because the grassroots is confused."

UMNO delegates, who are currently convening their divisional meetings throughout Malaysia in the lead up to the party general assembly mid-November, say they welcome the views from both sides in order to form their own balanced and informed judgements when the time comes. - CNA/ch

Youth wing: We won't let Anwar rejoin Umno
Saturday August 12, 2006
ABOVE: No way will Anwar Ibrahim be allowed to rejoin UMNO

BESUT: Umno Youth will go all out to oppose any attempt to bring back former Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim into Umno.

The movement's head Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said there was talk of efforts to bring Anwar back into the party, but Umno Youth would stick to its earlier stand against such a move.

He said this when opening the delegates meeting of the Besut Umno Youth and Puteri movements here yesterday.

Also present was Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh and Terengganu Umno Youth head Mohd Sabri Alwi.

Touching on other issues, Hishammuddin denied allegations that the central Umno Youth leadership was preventing the Youth divisions and branches from inviting several top executive council members from opening their meetings. "I wish to state that all exco members are free to open the division meetings, and the divisions are free to invite any top exco member," he said..

Some out to instigate Mahathir ;Saturday August 12, 2006

BALING: Umno Youth has no grudge against former Umno president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and its members have been told not to show disrespect towards the former party leader.

Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin said Dr Mahathir might have sincere intentions in raising certain issues of late because he was speaking in the interest of the nation.

"However, I feel there are certain parties who are out to instigate and influence Dr Mahathir into launching his attacks against the current leadership," he said when opening the Baling Umno Youth delegates' conference at Kompleks Rakan Muda here yesterday.

He named former Pasir Mas MP Datuk Paduka Ibrahim Ali and Dr Mahathir's former political secretary Matthias Chang as among those who influenced Dr Mahathir.

Khairy also said he was sad that there were certain quarters who were out to jeopardise Abdullah's leadership.

"The Prime Minister has been in office for only three years, so he should be given a chance to prove his leadership capabilities," he told the 800
delegates.

"Even though there are some people who claimed that Pak Lah was not the first choice as Prime Minister, he has been given the mandate by the people and the party."

Khairy also questioned why Dr Mahathir was being persistent in raising questions that had been answered "over and over again".

On Tuesday, Dr Mahathir was reported as asking during a question-and-answer session with the media how Khairy managed to acquire a RM9mil loan to buy a minor interest in financial services company ECM Libra Bhd late last year. Khairy had said that the vendors of the shares had given him the loan.

Umno Youth also called on the Government to postpone the signing of the US-Malaysia Free Trade Agreement as a mark of protest against Israel's attacks in Lebanon.

Mahathir won't end attacks till govt keeps its promises

Aug 12, 2006

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA'S former premier Mahathir Mohamad said yesterday that his attacks on the government will go on until it improves transparency and keeps its promises.

'The end game is to have a good government, a government that is open as promised, that all things are above board, that doesn't enrich one's family,' he said here.

He said he will continue his criticisms 'as long as the government is not transparent'.

Tun Dr Mahathir has accused Premier Abdullah Badawi of hurting the nation by crapping projects initiated by the former premier.

Yesterday, he accused the government of failing to keep its promises to allow greater press freedom and open bidding for state projects.

'I hear that some projects are given without any tender,' he said, declining to name the projects.

'And then there is of course this undertaking that the press would be free to print anything, but the press is anything but free, because we know that whatever I say will not be published, and lots of people write letters to the press, they are not published, unless these letters support the government.'

On Monday, Datuk Seri Abdullah denied claims that his family benefited from government contracts and defended his leadership. But yesterday, Tun Dr Mahathir said he had given Datuk Seri Abdullah time.

'I didn't say anything for two years. I was quiet. I observed his promises. I had high expectations. I expected his view to be different from me, but I don't see the government doing what it promises to do.'

Meanwhile yesterday, the Perak branch of the former elected Representatives Council of Malaysia said it planned to arrange a meeting between Datuk Seri Abdullah and Tun Dr Mahathir to resolve their differences. The branch had decided to express its full support to the government and party led by Datuk Seri Abdullah. -- BLOOMBERG, BERNAMA

'I will not form an Umno splinter group'
Beh Lih Yi Aug 12, 06 7:43pm [extract]

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has ruled out forming a splinter group of Umno in the wake of the intensified rift with his handpicked successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

"No, no, breakaway branch (of Umno), only one or two (Umno) leaders are wrong," he told reporters after attending the Umno Youth Petaling Jaya Utara division meeting today.

Mahathir however argued that his criticisms would not divide Umno "as there will always be differences in Umno but members will come together again when things become clearer".
