Fireworks Add To Joy Of Royal Wedding
KUALA KANGSAR, May 19 (Bernama) -- Fireworks lit up the night sky of Kuala Kangsar for 30 minutes as more than 10,000 people thronged the royal town to share in the joy of the wedding of the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, and the Raja Puan Besar, Tuanku Zara. The royal wedding ceremonies concluded Saturday night with the "bersanding" (sitting-in-state) ceremony at the Istana Iskandariah in Bukit Chandan, which was beamed live to giant screens here and in Ipoh. The fireworks, which began at 9.25pm, added to the gaiety of the neon lights and the "lampu panjut" (oil lamps) placed along a one-kilometre stretch of the Perak River.

At the Arena Square, more than 6,500 guests attended a feast for the common folk, which was sponsored by Raja Nazrin. Visitors started arriving as early as 6 pm, turning placid Kuala Kangsar into a town crammed with people and an unending stream of vehicles. However, the 100 policemen on duty since the afternoon did a good job of controlling the traffic along the several roads that had been turned into one-way streets. The jetty near Arena Square, which provides passenger boat services between Sayong and Kuala Kangsar, was busy with people coming to watch the "lampu panjut" and attend the feast. Several people approached said they did not want to miss out on the "bersanding" ceremony which was attended by sultans, the prime minister, deputy prime minister and other VIPs.

Government pensioner Shaharani Hassan, 65, of Parit, Perak, said he arrived at Arena Square at 6.30pm with his family in two cars. "I decided last week itself to come here after seeing the news of the wedding on television. I had also wanted to bring my grandchildren to see the fireworks and the oil lamps festival," he said. A former soldier, who wanted to be known only as Alias, came with his family to share in the joy of the royal couple. "We came not so much for the feast but to watch the bersanding of the Raja Muda and the Raja Puan Besar. The people of Perak have been waiting for a long time for the Raja Muda to get married," said Alias, who hails from Lenggong, Perak.

Oil Lamp Festival Adds Glitter To Wedding Celebration

May 19, 2007 18:33 PM

GLITTERING: Kuala Kangsar is transformed into a fairyland with the flickering of light of oil lamps and neon lights along the Sungai Perak.

KUALA KANGSAR, May 19 (Bernama) -- The royal town of Kuala Kangsar was bathed in multi-coloured neon lights as well as the flickering light of oil lamps last night to celebrate the wedding of the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, and the Raja Puan Besar of Perak, Tuanku Zara. Themed after the royal wedding, the oil lamps shaped like a mosque, a kris, a heart or a dome, adorned a one-kilometre stretch of the town's river bank facing the Laman Budaya. The configurations were each made up of between 1,000 and 3,500 bamboo or rattan oil lamps and embellished with banners bearing congratulatory messages like "God Bless the Royal Couple" and "Happy Marriage".

Enthusiastic house owners also took part in the "panjut" or oil lamp festival by lighting up their compounds with oil lamps to share in the joy of the royal wedding. The people of Kuala Kangsar and out-of-towners thronged the royal town which was bedecked with fancy neon lights, including at the clock tower located in the town centre. The decorative lamps were also put up in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007 and the country's 50th independence anniversary. About 20 government departments and agencies as well as the private sector are taking part in the two-day festival organised by the Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council.

A boat ride also allowed visitors to take in the panorama from a different perspective as they enjoyed the sight of the resplendent Istana Iskandariah and Ubudiah Mosque, all aglow under the night sky. The "bersanding" (sitting-in-state ceremony) will be held at the palace Saturday night. A feast for 5,000 people will also be held at the Arena Square to mark the occasion. Some 100 policemen will be on duty to monitor traffic flow in the royal town. Besides the oil lamp festival, people can also expect a grand fireworks display sponsored by the Chinese community in Perak tonight to celebrate the royal wedding.
