The focus on today’s trial revolved around the credibility of the witness in carrying out a DNA Test. Defence counsel Kuldip Kuma (ABOVE) disputed the credibility of the DNA based evidence presented by the witness and accused the tests were not carried out appropriately.

In cross-examination Dr J.Primulapathi, the director of the Chemist Department’s forensic division denied the DNA tests were carried out all at once instead was conducted one at a time to ascertain the best possible results. He added the tests were also carried out based on internationally recognized DNA testing procedures.

I Was Told Bone Fragments Belonged To One Body,' Chemist Tells Court

SHAH ALAM, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- A chemist told the High Court here today that he did not carry out DNA analysis on four bone specimens collected at the place where Altantuya Shaariibuu was allegedly murdered because he was informed that they belonged to one body. The four bone specimens were labelled spine, lumbar, pelvic and humerus. J. Primulapathi, 54, who is the Petaling Jaya Chemistry Department's head of forensic division, said he relied on the police about that fact and verified it with Kuala Lumpur Hospital's forensic pathologist, Dr Mohd Shah Mahmood, who had examined the specimens before they were handed over to the Chemistry Department.

"I had a talk with him and he told me all these bones belonged to one body from his examination," he said on the 48th day of trial for the murder of the 28-year-old Mongolian woman. Two policemen from the Special Action Squad -- C/Insp Azilah Hadri, 31, and Cpl Sirul Azhar Umar, 36, -- are charged with the murder while political analyst Abdul Razak Abdullah Baginda, 47, is alleged to have abetted them.

PREVIEW Next Post - Mat Rempits on the Run - Saturday Oct 6 2007

MORE PICS & Video – Mat Rempits Menance under Control?Numbers are Multiplying & Spreading; Weekend Arrest 84 includes Pillion riders for various offencesaround Dataran Merderka & Raja Laut Areas

This social menace can only be found in Malaysia and Putera Umno chief Datuk Abdul Azeez must be given credit for legitimizing them in the early days classifying them as Mat Cemerlang Then Putera Umno wants to turn Mat Rempit and their races into a tourist attraction. He justified their existence thus: “Not all Mat Rempits are a menace to society. Mat Rempits have a bad reputation because of bad apples among them.” He believed that Mat Rempits if harnessed, they could be an asset to Putera Umno. And even KJ at one time suggested to recruit these kamikaze Mat Rempits as Umno youth members. Can we imagine in the next GE, they can be rounded up to form convoys of supporters ferrying young voters to the polling stations?
But the IGP put a stop to these suggestions and efforts and also outcry from the public as illegal street races can give a negative impression of lawlessness in the country and can undermine inbound tourism in the Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

This menace may be under control by the Police but their numbers are multiplying by the scores daily and spreading to every part of the country. What are the sociologists in the Ivory Towers proposing to overcome this problem? Now the police are wasting many resources (rather than fighting crimes) especially during the weekends to conduct raids on their usual racing grounds. But their mobility outsmarts the Police. When roadblocks are placed in their favorite haunts, they were quick to get the messages through SMSs and divert to the outskirt roads. So the police are playing a cat and mouse game with these mat rempits. Over the weekend on Oct 6 07, 84 were rounded up literally with the Police chasing them on foot and pulled some of them from the machines when they tried to escape.

Mat Rempit under control

By MOHD YAAKOB YUSOF and MEERA MURUGESAN; MM

KUALA LUMPUR: The Mat Rempit menace is under control. That’s the assurance from top Kuala Lumpur and Malacca traffic officers despite concerns sparked after the recent attack on two undercover traffic police officers. Kuala Lumpur traffic police chief Assistant Commissioner A. Wahab A. Raman said sustained operations have resulted in a drop of public complaints against this group. “We are conducting operations daily, especially at Tasik Sri Pemaisuri, Bulatan Pahang, Jalan Parlimen, Dataran Merdeka, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Raja Laut.”

He said until July, 235 motorcyclists had been investigated under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act for reckless and dangerous driving and 105 pillion riders under Section 111 for abetting. In July, he said 77 motorcyclists were detained under Section 42 — the highest so far this year. This is followed by February and June with 32 motorcyclists detained. When asked if any Mat Rempits were involved in criminal activities, he said it was not under traffic police jurisdiction. “We put up roadblocks to check the licence, road tax, plate number and chassis number to find out if they have been involved in other crimes.

“We have seized knives, parang and cutters from illegal racers and believe they were involved in other criminal activities.” He said these suspects are handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department. “Our priority is to curb illegal racing which is not only dangerous to motorcyclists but other road-users.” On last weekend’s incident where two police officers were assaulted by Mat Rempits, he said illegal racers become aggressive when approached by police personnel. “Section 42 of the Act involves imprisonment and those afraid to be caught often become aggressive.” Those convicted under the section face jail terms not exceeding five years, and a fine of not less than RM5,000 and not more than RM15,000. A second or subsequent conviction means a jail term not exceeding 10 years and a fine of not less than RM10,000 and not more than RM20,000. Wahab said most of the illegal racers are aged 19 to 25. He said Kuala Lumpur has become a magnet for illegal racing as “the city doesn’t sleep”. He said there are many entertainment and shopping centres that attract them. They choose Kuala Lumpur to show off their stunts. They wouldn’t choose a lonely road.” Their activities, he said, are “under control”, especially with the presence of Squad 42, which was formed last year to curb illegal racing.

It was reported that Federal traffic chief SAC II Hamza Taib had urged other States to form similar squads by the year-end. Hamza had said that illegal racing activities had spread to other cities like Johor Baru, Penang, Ipoh, Alor Star and Malacca. He said 1,557 riders had been detained nationwide from 2005 until July this year. Malacca Tengah traffic chief Assistant Superintendent Ahmad Salam said the problem is under control. “It’s not happening every single night as police conduct patrols daily.” He said it has become a trend for youngsters to be involved in such activities. “Sometimes, they get wind of our operations and move into the outskirts to race, but we are monitoring them and arrests have been made.”

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Will Blast Off For ISS Tomorrow

FIRST ASTRONAUT… Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Sheikh Mustapha (ABOVE), 34, will be the first Malaysian astronaut to blast off to the International Space Station from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan.

From Abdul Rahman Ahmad

BAIKONUR (Kazakhstan), Oct 9 (Bernama) -- Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor has been chosen by the Russian Space Agency (Roscosmos) as Malaysia's first angkasawan (cosmonaut) to join a space mission tomorrow. The 35-year-old orthopaedic surgeon from Seremban will spend 10 days on the International Space Station (ISS). Joining him are Commander Peggy Whitson from the United States and Russian flight engineer Yuri Malenchenko. The spacecraft that will take them to the ISS will lift off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 7.21pm local time (9.21pm Malaysian time). Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jamaludin Jarjis said Dr Sheikh Muszaphar was selected based on Malaysia's original recommendation to Roscosmos naming him as the first-choice candidate and Capt Dr Faiz Khaleed, 27, as the second choice. He said the Roscosmos selection panel studied all reports submitted by the various training units which had prepared the two men for the mission. The minister told Malaysian journalists covering the space mission that Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, Dr Faiz and their respective team members were present when the announcement was made. He said the selection panel which met for 30 minutes also agreed that Dr Faiz be included in the 2008/09 space mission and allowed to undergo training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Star City, Moscow. Dr Jamaludin said he would inform the Cabinet about the panel's recommendation pertaining to Dr Faiz. The minister, however, did not rule out the possibility of changes in the crew line-up four hours prior to lift off. "On behalf of the Malaysian government, I would like to say thank you to Russia for making this mission possible. It's going to be a truly historic moment for Malaysia which is celebrating its 50th anniversary of independence this year. "It's also a significant event for Russia as this year marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of the first man-made satellite (Sputnik) ," he said.

Dr Jamaludin also thanked the Russians for having assisted Malaysian scientists in making preparations for the research work to be conducted by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar during his space sojourn. He said Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and Dr Faiz also addressed the selection panel in Russian. The programme to send a Malaysian to space was conceived in 2003 when Russia agreed to send a Malaysian to the ISS as part of Malaysia's RM3.4 billion purchase of 18 Russian-made Sukhoi jet fighters.
