MORE PICS – Final Piggy Order; 91,000 Transfer Out - Sept 21 07 Deadline; Maximum Allowed – 48,000 – More Cheap Pork Expected; No Extension of Time

ABOVE: Malaysiakini 2nd Report (details H E R E )reveals the State Government stands firm in its demand to limit the number to only 48,000 pigs the whole Sate of Melaka and have set a new deadline of 21st Sep 07 to ship out 91,000. This is indeed a tall order. The MCA reps were just impotent as the other reps but to accept the directive. Equally at Parliament, the DAP was helpless but to watch this injustice. Aborted Pig-Culling Operation Debated In Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- The aborted culling operation to reduce the number of pigs reared in Bukit Beruang, Paya Mengkuang and Man Lok in Alor Gajah, Melaka, from more than 100,000 to 48,000 was debated at the Dewan Rakyat today.

Datuk Mohd Said Yusof (BN-Jasin) said the matter was not a racial issue as implied by the opposition as the operation was meant to protect the environment and the people living in surrounding areas. "Don't just defend the 64 breeders while the plight of more than 20,000 people in Melaka is ignored," he said when debating the Supplementary Supply Bill 2007. He said the sensitivities of the majority of the people in the areas concerned should also be taken into consideration, and praised them for not resorting to demonstrations and for seeking Umno's assistance to solve the problem.

"Warnings had been issued before, discussions were held and they (breeders) had agreed to relocate the farms to other areas. We took them at their word but they have apparently betrayed our trust. "The case dated back 50 years ago. This is a problem about the well-being (of the people) and the environment. So don't politicise it," he said. The culling operation was abandoned yesterday after a stand-off before the breeders promised to relocate their pigs to other areas.

Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Ipoh Timur), who raised the issue, said the government should study and discuss the matter with the affected parties before launching the operation which he described as contrary to national unity. "The proposed operation created tension and this should not have happened. This is an environmental issue which should be resolved amicably rather than in a confrontational manner," he said. Meanwhile, Datuk Idris Haron (BN-Tangga Batu) denied the situation was tense during the operation.

ABOVE & BELOW: The impotent MCA reps & others attended but to take orders at the meeting; no negotiation at all.

"MPAG (Alor Gajah Municipal Council) president (Baharom Majid) told me that the situation wasn't tense. Actually, when I was MPAG president, three negotiations were held with the breeders who then agreed to relocate their pigs," he said. Idris said the state government had relaxed the condition by setting the deadline for the extra pigs to be destroyed, slaughtered or sold by Aug 31 but this was ignored. Yesterday, the state government extended the deadline to Sept 21.

The operation yesterday involved the police, Rela, Immigration Department, Veterinary Services Department, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Department of Environment, MPAG, Public Works Department and Melaka/Negeri Sembilan Orang Asli Affairs Department. The decision to reduce the pig population was taken to tackle river pollution and the unbearable stench faced by the people in surrounding areas.

SMART Tunnel First Flood Diversion Exercise A Success

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- The first real flood diversion at the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) here on Monday night was successful and has proven to be effective in reducing flash floods in the city, said Kuala Lumpur Flood Mitigation Project director K J Abraham. He said in the exercise, the Stormwater Control Centre (SCC) in the city alerted SMART's control centre when the water levels at its monitoring stations reached critical level.

"SMART's control centre went into immediate action and started evacuation procedures. The process took an hour before the tunnel was closed to traffic," he told a press conference here today. Abraham said the tunnel diverted about 500,000 cubic metres of rainwater into the Taman Desa holding pond thus keeping water levels safe at the 29-metre mark at the monitoring stations.

He said floodwater subsided at midnight before SMART's control centre activated tunnel opening procedures after required inspections and cleaning work were done and that by 5am on Tuesday the tunnel was re-opened to traffic. The RM1.9-billion tunnel, now fully operational, is able to divert rain water away from the confluence of Sungai Klang and Sungai Ampang in the city.

"Next year, the Batu and Jinjang ponds under the Gombak River diversion channel project will be operational and this will further help reduce flash floods in the city," said Abraham. The 13.2-metre diametre tunnel, construction of which began in 2003, is a 9.7km stormwater bypass tunnel with a four-kilometre dual-deck motorway within it. It was built to solve the problem of flash flooding in the city as well as reduce traffic jams during daily rush hours.
