Syabas Ready For Possibility Of Floods
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 (Bernama) -- Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) has prepared contingency plans to face the possibility of floods occurring in the Klang Valley, said its chief executive officer Ruslan Hassan.
He said the measures were taken following the weather reports which had forecast the possibility of floods occurring in the Klang Valley and southern parts of Selangor if heavy rains persisted in the coming weeks. Persistent heavy downpours in the southern parts of peninsular Malaysia since last week had resulted in several areas in Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang to be flooded and the victims being evacuated to relief centres. Speaking at a press conference here Saturday, he said that the Syabas Emergency Response Plan (ERP) had been activated with the ERP natural disaster operations room at the headquarters and 10 other districts being placed on alert round the clock.
"We have adequate assets, staff and plans to tackle the problems that may arise," he said. Ruslan said that monitoring of hill slopes, ground movements at the dams and reservoirs and all Syabas assets in rain-prone areas had been enhanced. He said 55 tanker lorries, 476 static water tanks and 20,000 five-litre water containers were being made available to face the possibility of floods. Members of the public can contact Syabas at the Puspel toll-free line at 1-800-88-5252 which operates round the clock, or SMS to 39222 by typing PUSPEL on any water supply problem.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak received the contributions of RM3.2 million in cash and RM470,000 in kind on behalf of the Kumpulan Wang Amanah Bantuan Bencana Negara fund, at his office here. To a question, Najib, who is Defence Minister, said that enough helicopters were being deployed to help in relief efforts. He was also asked about an article carried by a Chinese daily over a police report filed by a business proprietor in Segamat, Johor, against an army personnel who had allegedly asked for money before rendering assistance to flood victims.
