Police are asking witnesses to come forward with further details of an accident which happened at Jalan Tun Perak near Merdeka Square in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A man believed to be under the influence of alcohol crashed his SUV into a taxi (possibly after failing to STOP at the RED Lights) killing the cab driver on the spot and injuring two passengers. Fearing for his life he tried to escape by jumping into the river but was caught and beaten by several people who gave chase. He was arrested by the police.

Initial investigation revealed that the SUV vehicle was stolen last year.

KUALA LUMPUR: A taxi driver, 61, was killed when his vehicle collided with a SUV near Jalan Tun Perak yesterday. Sudirman Zainon was taking two passengers to the city centre when the SUV crashed into his taxi near the Masjid Jamek LRT station.

A police spokesman said passers-by who saw the incident rushed at the three occupants of the SUV and started beating them."Knowing that they had, caused the accident, the three men fled the scene. However, the driver fell into the Sungai Gombak and broke his leg, while the other two got away.

Passsers-by, taking the laws in their own hands gave this man (ABOVE) instant jsutice for causing the death of the cabbie; beaten but not dead he was sent to the Hospital KL on a stretcher (BELOW)


The SUV was heading towards Sentul. Police have detained the driver, and are looking for the other two men in their 20s.Sudirman, of Ulu Klang, died on the spot, while his passengers were given outpatient treatment at the
Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

KUALA LUMPUR: Several members of the public assaulted a passenger of a four-wheel-drive vehicle after he and his friend were involved in an accident with a taxi in Jalan Tun Perak here resulting in the death of the cabbie.

In the 2.30am incident yesterday, the driver of the four-wheel-drive vehicle was believed to have beaten a traffic light at a junction near Merdeka Square.The bigger vehicle rammed into the taxi, killing the driver on the spot. He has been identified as Sudirman Zainol, 61.

Two passengers in the taxi were also injured. Several members of the public who saw the incident gave chase after the driver, in his 30s, and the 29-year-old passenger tried to flee the scene on foot. The driver managed to escape but the passenger who ran towards Jalan Masjid Jamek fell into the Gombak River.

He was then assaulted by his pursuers, causing the man to sustain serious injuries to his face and body. He also suffered a broken leg.The man has been warded at Kuala Lumpur Hospital where his condition is said to be stable.

City traffic chief Asst Comm Hamza Taib said that police were looking for the driver who has yet to lodge a report.
